Discover the old memories in Danzishi Old Street

Fall in love with a city by wandering its old streets. For those people who live in area around the Old Street of Danzishi Dafo in Chongqing’s Nan’an District, this street is filled with memories of old Chongqing. Now, the hustle and bustle of the past has faded away as the time goes by. As an old city, however, it’s witnessed thousands of years of changes throughout history, the street still retains its old looks, connecting the past and the future.


Traditional teahouse

An empty bowl, two dice, two bowls of Chinese wine, and a plate of peanuts. For the people who live in this area, it’s basically the routine work of their daily life. Gossiping and talking about domestic matters, the friendships gradually became stronger through these leisure moments.


Traditional vegetable market

Compared to the other supermarkets in Chongqing, you can tell the original ones here, with stalls located along a narrow street, recently, only regular visitors from the Old Streets would visit this place to buy something. Living here for a while, you will quickly become familiar with it, people do not refuse to fit in because of the chaotic environment.


Traditional craftsmen

At first sight, from the basic shoe repair machine, and others around it, passers-by might think that this is just a worker at a shoe repair stand. But he does more than just shoe repairs, he also duplicates keys and conducts other business. Locals of this street first gave the nickname “Mr. Wang” to Wang Ping who, speaking of the Old Street, said with deep feelings, “This is my second home, since I have worked here for 20 years and not left once.”


Traditional markets

The crisp and refreshing pickles, after years of preparation, give off a familiar scent. Customers can often decide whether the taste is what they want by smelling it. The owner often exerts herself to selling the goods with a headset in her ear, which makes the street livelier.


Traditional butcher shop

Wang Yunjie is a 53 year old man who has worked in the pork business for more than 20 years. He opens for business every day from 6am to 6pm and, over the past 20 years, his business is always sought out, and he welcomes customers to the area. His little butcher shop makes his life meaningful.


Traditional tailor

“Gada Gata,” along the street, you can hear the voice coming from the old sewing machine, the sewing master is hemming a pair of pants. For the people who live here, what remains are only the traces from the old sewing machine. For the owner, it is not just a hero, but also sticking to its post.


Traditional cupping therapy shop

At the Conner of the street, traditional bamboo cupping has caught peoples’ eyes. Two cupped people sit on plastic stools on the street with more than 20 cans on each of their backs.


Traditional watch repair shop

On the street, there is a Time-Honored Brand, The Clock and Watch Shop, which is now run by Liu Renfang and her husband, who took it over from their fathers more than thirty years ago. In the past “A continuous stream of customers came to our stores to repair watch, sometimes we would work from 7 in the morning to 12 in the evening but, with the rise of electronic watches, business has gradually gotten worse."
