CQGuide: Welcome! From behalf of CQ expat guide, I'd like to say welcome to Chongqing but let just get into it.What triggered you to come to Chongqing?

Oliver: I didn't even know this city existed before, so I had to do some extra research to find out some information, I was very impressed to see the size of the city, some even say it's the largest city in the world. Some say it has double size of Switzerland I said wow I have to make it there!

CQGuide: Have you ever thought about moving to China before? Have you ever traveled to China to visit prior to?

Oliver: I was traveling a few times to china, but mainly towards the east coast cities, like Beijing Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong all of these areas.

Oliver: I never been to CQ before and actually to the central part of china, it's very interesting, its so much different to Shanghai, Beijing.

CQGuide: Definitely you still a newbie is what we call them. What have you notices about Chongqing since you have been here, that's a little bit different from your hometown?

Oliver: Bridges, bridges everywhere

CQGuide: Bridges. Maybe 15 or something?

Oliver: Ah there must be more it's just bridges everywhere, you know what is really nice is the central part of all the skyscrapers at night everything lights up.

CQGuide: I would definitely say that night time is the most beautiful time in Chongqing. I did notice that's when foreigner first come here, they don't realize how big the city is and how intertwined the city is and how like lights go and the tourism with is. However a lot of people don't realize that in the summer it's very very hot. Have you heard about this?

Oliver: I've heard about this and that's why I sent my family to another place.😎

CQGuide: Ok so you've done the planning for this.

Oliver: I've done the planning.

那是。

CQGuide: Fair enough because it's like I don't know if you've heard about game of thrones, soits very similar to winter is coming, it's like summer is coming in Chongqing so like beware, be planned, be ready. Are there any events the Kempinski Hotel have for the foreigners who are stuck here?

Oliver: Well we are doing some activities, which we will start doing now straight away. So we have the Chinese restaurant on the 4th floor of the hotel that is very nice, we just changed the menu to a more Sichuan style. Our kitchen team were sitting like 3-month brain storming, finding outancient recipes, working on the decoration, how to plate it so every plate looks like a piece of art actually, it's very very nice. We just kicked it out like last week, it's the new menu live.

CQGuide: Yes to try and get a Michelin Star.

Oliver: Yes, well it looks a bit like this, but when you have a Michelin star then people expect that it is completely overpriced and that's what we don't want to do, so it is very nice quality. Our chefs go to the market every day and handpick the fruit vegetables so we only have the finest quality food and that's something that people should really try. There is an air-conditioning so it won't be hot in there.🙂

CQGuide: I think air-conditioning is a must. Definitely, and that awesome because I've noticed that Chinese food had started to really take off and the culinary area and I recently met with The US ambassador, his wife is a world renowned chef and actually more popular than he is and she cooked for us and she was telling us how Chinese food especially in Sichuan id beginning to take off and caught the attention of foreigner all over the world because of the spices and the complication of making the different dishes is so fascinating.

Oliver: That is something interesting what people normally do in our Paulaner Beer Houseyou know because it is usually known for our German beer German food and we also have to find something for the local market to be very attractive.

CQGuide: To have a kind of connection, yeah

Oliver: So we make a kind of fusion there between the Sichuan cuisine and German food we make a hot pot based out of beer and sauerkraut.

CQGuide: That's interesting. I love hot pot

Oliver: Its not that spicy. Instead of all these local vegetables and local meats we actually use German food items that you can put in. So it's a very nice. We still fine tune the concept but this will be something livevery soon.

CQGuide: Yeah, nice little German infused hot pot. That's a great spin of things. And so your fully German correct.

Oliver: Correct.

CQGuide: All right, so I'm sure have the understanding of what the cultural biased about Germans are very direct and strict to the point and precise and very neat. What is your take on that being here in China and the business here, the business atmosphere?

Oliver: Well I left my hometown Berlin, in 1996 already a long time ago and since then I'm actually travelling all over the world work in many countries. The pure German strict way won't work, you have to be very flexible, you have to be open for compromise you need to respect different cultures and if you show the respect it usually works.

CQGuide: Ok that's good. Because I was wondering, at Chongqing Expat Guide you know our focus is to look at the expat the community however our team is Chinese as well as expat and it is always interesting the dynamic we have and to work with each other to make sure that we are on the same page. However I could not imagine running such a huge business and having the differences. I mean have you created a plan or training to make this transition smoother?

Oliver: Well you have to always find a way to motivate your team to trigger something to find a way and I believe this works here quite well. Our team is very well educated and actually motivated so it's not so hard.

CQGuide: Not difficult. Ok. What countries have you worked in actually? You said you have travelled and you've worked in countries.

Oliver: For my fixed assignment have been in Europe. That was in Germany and Austria. Then I was very long time in Russia. I worked in two hotels for theSochi Winter Olympics that was impressive

CQGuide: How was that?

Oliver: Impressive because you know everything was planned to be ready for the February 2014 especially all of the road was so much in delay but since the project was somehow chaired by someone quite high up in the politics, they obviously found a way to actually speed it up in the end.

CQGuide: Nice!

Oliver: We have been able to open the hotel one day before the opening of the winter games, it was right on time

CQGuide: Wow! That's cutting it close.

Oliver: It was fantastic experience

CQGuide: Ok that good. Well definitely I think that Chongqing doesn't have that big, probably will never win the bid for an Olympic Games.

Oliver: Maybe?

CQGuide: But who knows. We defiantly have a huge football stadium in Chenjiaping which has hosted a quite few different games, but finger crossed maybe they get the Olympics. So what are some of the main strengths for the hotel that you would say that Kempinski has part being in Chongqing?

Oliver: Well I would say it's the quality, I believe all 5 star hotels focus on the quality, so quality you will find in all our hotels, all our hotels have a nice view because you have skyscrapers everywhere, so I believe our USP (Unique Selling point) is the personalized service that we take care of the customer, so it's like a small family. We know each customer who comes and if we don't know we will try to get to know them.

CQGuide: So you focus on customer service.

Oliver: Big focus on customer service.

CQGuide: I think that's good. It's always nice to have that feeling of respect and want and comfort but then know it's not really that big business service-based mind like ok hey I'm going to give you this and then ok bye. It's more of a concerning you know more of a personalized feature that is where the world is going now.

Oliver: Exactly!

同意!

CQGuide: So how do you balance working life being here in China?

Oliver: Currently it's a bit tough because I'm still fresh here there are so many things now to focus on. Currently I spend more time at work than private but I believe after summer when everything has been implemented here, I will have a bit more free time and then I can also see something out in the city because I've heard it's so much beautiful behind the mountains.

CQGuide: Yes, it is.

是的。

Oliver: So I have to see that as well and I've seen these nice rivers cruise options that I believe I people should try.

CQGuide: So our company we do a lot of events so we do a lot of, also we inform people about where to go and what to do, such as hotpot places, hot places, hot events hot bars, tourist attractions all of that. So we will kind of be of assistance when you do get the free time to do it, but more so the working balance is a bit of struggle for especially foreigner when they come to China, not speaking to China, trying to make yourself more adaptable, what things have you tried to help your family with trying to become more adaptable since you guys have gotten here?

Oliver: Well actually my wife is a member of CQExpat this group and also kind of in The International Women's Group which is quite helpful here with setting up so it is working quite good.

CQGuide: That's good. Another question: last week you guys had the Mayfest event, tell us more about that?

Oliver: It was just great. It was for 3 days. All in all we had almost 800 customers coming.

CQGuide: Wow!

哇!

Oliver: For the 3 days we sold over 1,200 liters of beer.

CQGuide: Sounds like a great time.

Oliver:We had a very famous band coming from Austria who made so much fun there so they people really had fun, they enjoyed it and we will do the same in October for Octoberfest.

Oliver: But we may do it for even longerperiod, because it was completely sold out, we had a high demand on the market and we are the only brewery who actually can make such events.

CQGuide: And quality. I think the quality is really important because there were a few bars here in Chongqing that were all you can drink all you can eat. Yeah, it's our own brewed beer and you can try this try these different specialties and it just you know for foreigners definitely there is a different expectation when it comes to the quality of the beer.

Oliver:Yes, we focus more on quality and not quantity.

Oliver: Yeah I mean it's brewed in house all the ingredients come from Germany, we do have our own brew master who makes beer everyday.

CQGuide: Well what is the relationship that you guys have with the Paulaner?

Oliver: the relationship of Kempinski and Paulaner goes back many years I believe it goes back to when we opened our first hotel in Beijing The Kempinski Lufthansa Centre where we had the first Paulaner there which was 25 years back and since then many hotels have the Paulaner brewery inside so it's a kind of joint partnership. They both have roots in Germany and they are both focused on hand crafted quality.

CQGuide: Yes, and it benefits you both. Do you have anything you would like to say to our viewers our followers?

Oliver: Well the viewers for sure enjoy the beautiful nature behind the mountains of Chongqing. The beautifulskyline, the bridges, I've heard there is a place where the metro train drives into a house which I have to see as well.

CQGuide: Oh Erm Liziba. It's the Liziba train, its I don't know why there was this video that went viral on the Internet

Oliver: It even went to Germany in the news, yeah it was very interesting.

CQGuide: Yeah, it was all over there. I lived here, I was living here at that time and I was like yeah that's the Liziba, it's not that big of a deal but now Chongqing has decided to emphasize the big the special things and the uniqueness of its city and they have started to do construction over there for tourists and its nice. It's nice.

Oliver: Since Chongqing just recently now became a first-tiercity since two years ago investments will more come and more infrastructures which will help to develop.

CQGuide: Yeah that is nice.

對。

CQGuide: So do you have any unique quotes that you would like to tell my followers about coming to the Kempinski, any special?

Oliver: Well as I said personalized services is our USP. We purely focus on the quality what we also do is we take much care of the children. We have a restaurant on the second floor which has its own playground.

CQGuide: Oh nice!

Oliver: Which is nice so the kids can play there.

Oliver: That also keeps them separate. We also set up if customers come with a child, we have a nice set-up in the room especially for the children like a children's bath, or toys, so this is also something that we take care of.

CQGuide: What would you say to the local Expat traveler who is travelling through China and comes to Chongqing looking for a hotel and wants a nice quality hotel? What would you say to this guy?

Oliver: Welcome to The Kempinski Hotel in Chongqing.
