Located in Hechuan District of Chongqing, Diaoyu Fortress is honored as a Key Cultural Relics Site under the State Protection, and is famous for the battle between Mongolia and the Southern Song Dynasty in the 13th century. According to historical records, in 1258, the Mongolian Khan led an army to attack the Southern Song Dynasty, however in the following year he encountered tenacious resistance in Diaoyu Fortress and got himself killed. In order to compete for the Khan’s position, the Western Expedition Army of Mongolia, considered by the West as “the whip of God” hastily withdrew its troops from all over Europe and Asia. As a result, the situation of the world at that time was changed and the Diaoyu Fortress was named as“the Broke of God's Whip”from then on.

All along, the grand battlefield situation from "Great Battle of the Diaoyu Fortress" has been existed only in the literature, lacking actual historical evidence. However, in the past decade or so, the Chongqing Cultural Heritage Research Institute has been performing archaeological excavations in the Diaoyu Fortress with archaeological teams and discovered a large number of historical relics and artifacts that confirmed the war. Among them, the Fanjiayan Historic Site is an especially essential discovery.

According to the archaeologists, the Fanjiayan Historic Site is divided into three parts: a front courtyard, an intermediate courtyard, and a backyard, consisting of the instrument gate, courtyard, lobby, warehouse, and the bedroom behind it, as well as the garden on the right. It has been inferred that this is a three-way large-scale construction. It should be the site of the military and political facilities during the Southern Song Dynasty, which was the government office at wartime.

During the excavation of the Fanjiayan Historic Site, the archaeological team discovered a ditch at the side of the site. Archaeologists judged that there should be a garden with a pool and a pavilion.

According to archaeologists, Fanjia Weir is located on a hill, so the drainage ditch is conducive to reducing the threat of mountain torrents. This also reflects the wisdom of the ancients.

It is reported that in the large number of artifacts excavated, there are exquisite porcelain from Jingdezhen, as well as chess and other entertainment items. Archaeologists believe that these artifacts reflect the self-confidence and courage of the people who were determined to guard the isolated city.
