Italy 意大利

Chongqing has been my home since August 2016 and I miss it everyday while enduring the Italian lockdown. I was on my Chinese New Year holiday when the outbreak started in China, little did I know I wouldn't be able to go back. I had two flights cancelled from two different carriers while trying to get back to Chongqing, and as I couldn't stay on holiday forever, I decided to go back to Italy. When I arrived temperature checks at the airport were already in place. Life was still normal, so I enjoyed a bit of my hometown while still being very cautious.

Schools were the first to be closed and video lessons became the norm. Some hard hit regions were placed on lockdown, then on March 10th the whole country was closed off. From that point on people were only allowed to leave their house for necessary activities: grocery shopping, delivery to elderly family members, work or proven emergencies. No one was allowed to leave their residential town except for valid reasons. Restaurants, bars, and all non-essential places were asked to suspend business. We were mocked by many European countries, but soon even they had to realize what was happening (while others still seem to ignore the situation). Luckily, other countries, including China, offered help and we were not left alone.

Every country decided on their own approach, and to be honest any approach is experimental as COVID-19 is a new virus. I personally think our prime minister Conte did well and had good intentions, finding his reasons in trying to flatten the curve and lessen the burden on the overwhelmed public healthcare system.

Numbers eventually began to decrease, and on May 4th phase 2 started: people were allowed to go out for walks and exercise. Up to that point I had only left my house to explore a 200m surrounding perimeter. Masks were already required for shopping, but became required in enclosed and public spaces. My region gave each person a free reusable, non-sewed mask. People could start to go visit close family. Stores opened for take away. Social Distancing was in place, and everyone had to be at least one meter apart at any given time. On May 18th more stores opened. As I was on vacation when I came back, I had only a backpack with me, while all my things are still in China, so I am excited to buy more clothes.

I personally don't find quarantine life horrible, although having a quarantined birthday wasn't the easiest. However, I am lucky. I have a garden and can use this time to help my father in the greenhouses. I wake up at 7-7.30 every morning, regardless, and go to bed by midnight to keep a healthy routine. I use this time to write (by hand or on a borrowed computer), watch tv shows and videos. I have done some indoor yoga and some walking. I have read and played board games. I haven't had any video calls as both my phone and tablet do not support Zoom or Skype. I had pizza, noodles, sushi and Burger King delivered. I take one day at the time until things get better, China lifts its foreigners ban and I can go back to my beloved Chongqing.
