We love our diverse family

The 1st of June each year marks the beginning of Pride month. During this month loud and proud events and parades are held in major cities around the world, to celebrate the LGBT+ community, recognise the battles they have fought for equal rights, and acknowledge the continued barriers they face even in 2020. They are colourful, joyful celebrations of our diversity.

The history of the gay rights movement

LGBT+ is an umbrella term for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, and is sometimes extended to LGBTQIA+ to include queer, intersex and asexual people. The ‘+’ is there to include all other groups that do not fall under the heterosexual (straight) or cis-gender (where your gender - how you feel, look and present - matches your sex) groups.

The Pride movement was started after a week of protests and riots in New York in 1970, which were sparked by the repeated raiding of a bar called the Stonewall Inn, located in the gay area of the city. Members of the gay community were fed up of being harassed by the authorities. This inspired others around the world to join the protests and fight for equality, and they are now marked each June with celebrations across the world.

Being LGBT+ in China

LGBT+ people in China continue to face social and legal challenges not faced by non-LGBT+ people. Whilst homosexual relationships are officially recognised, same-sex couples are unable to marry or adopt, and LGBT+ events and activities across the country are often shut down or censored. Chinese people often feel shame if they are LGBT+ and do not come out to their families.

China does celebrate Pride in Shanghai, with a schedule of parties, talent shows, art exhibitions, a Pride run, trivia nights, travel discussions and film screenings at venues across the city.
