China Rounds Out the World’s Top Five Fastest-growing Tourism City - Chongqing Rank the Top of the List

The world's top 10 fastest-growing tourism cities are all in Asia, with China rounding out the top five, according to the latest data from the World Tourism and Travel Council (WTTC). Chongqing topped the list, followed by Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu.

Within the next 10 years, Asian cities will be at the forefront of global tourism growth, especially Chinese cities, according to the association's latest report on the “Impact of Urban Tourism and Travel”. The study covers 65 cities around the whole world, with two-thirds of ranked cities in the Asia-Pacific region.

With tourism revenues rising by an average of 14% a year, Chongqing, in southwest China, topped the list,. followed by Guangzhou, which grew by 13.1% a year. Shanghai and Beijing ranked third and fourth with 12.8% and 12%, respectively. Chengdu had the fifth highest growth, growing by 11.2% a year. Other cities in the ranking were Manila (10.9%), Delhi (10.8%), Shenzhen (10.7%), Kuala Lumpur (10.1%) and Jakarta (10%).

China's huge domestic market is the strong backbone of the rapid growth of the tourism cities, the report said. Gloria Guevara, chief executive of the WTTC, also praised the "impressive double-digit growth rate." She said that Chinese tourists have promoted the development of many tourism cities around the world. However, at the same time, the potential of China's domestic tourism industry is even greater.
